Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Acupuncture is a complete holistic health care system which promotes and reinforces the body’s ability to heal and self-regulate by enhancing the recuperative power of the immune system, supporting physical and emotional health, and improving overall function and well-being. Acupuncture is a safe, effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems. Acupuncture acts to support the meridian pathways of the body, which transport Qi, or Life Energy, to specific organs and glands. Qi animates the body, and is vital in protecting it from illness, pain, and disease. The state of a person’s health is intricately linked with the quality, quantity, and balance of Qi throughout the meridians and correlated physical structures. An obstruction to Qi flow in one part of the body, caused by physical or emotional trauma, stress, overexertion, poor diet, accidents and injuries, among other things, can cause restriction in other parts, cutting off vital nourishment to the organs, glands, and other important structures of the body. While in some cases the body can innately bounce back from a blockage, in other cases acupuncture is a highly beneficial tool when the disruption is excessive, or prolonged, or if the body is already in a weakened state when the blockage occurs. During your initial treatment with an acupuncturist, a full health history is gathered and discussed. This allows the practitioner to effectively diagnose and detect any specific imbalances of Qi that are contributing to, and reinforcing, existing health problems. During treatment, the practitioner will insert fine, sterile needles at specific ‘acu’ points along meridian pathways, which will unblock the obstruction and balance flow, allowing Qi to circulate freely throughout the body, providing nourishment to organs, glands, and tissues down to the cellular level.
Acupuncture is recognized by the national Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as effective in treating the following conditions:
